As part of the Climate Change Act, the UK has committed to reduce green house gas emissions to 80% of their 1990 levels by 2050.

Large electricity users in the Public Sector (those using 6,000 MWh or more) will be subject to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), a cap and trade scheme designed to reduce emissions from participating organisations. Loans and matched funding for many public sector bodies can be secured from Salix. Salix is a not-for-profit organisation working with UK public sector bodies to improve energy efficiency, cut energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.

1. 100% Interest free loans to English and Welsh public sector bodies

Loans are available on a first-come first-served basis under the Salix Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme until the annual fund has been allocated. Bodies eligible include Local Authorities; Schools; Higher and Further Education Institutions; NHS Trusts; Central Government Departments and other England based public sector bodies meeting the criteria as defined in Section 3 of the Public Contract Regulations 2006.

2. 50% matched funding for energy efficiency projects
Spacer 20
Salix also offer long term, ring fenced, interest free, match funding conditional grants to public sector bodies to fund energy and carbon saving projects. As long as the host organisation recycles energy efficiency savings into additional energy efficiency projects the initial funding does not need to be repaid.
